Piper Alpha, operated by Occidental Petroleum, stood in the North Sea roughly 120 miles northeast of Aberdeen. On the night of 6 July 1988, a condensate leak ignited, triggering explosions and prolonged oil and gas fires. The platform’s position as a production and processing hub allowed hydrocarbons to continue feeding the blaze from connected installations.
Of the 226 people on the platform, 61 survived. Many victims were trapped in the accommodation module after smoke and fire blocked normal escape routes; 30 bodies were never recovered. The disaster remains the deadliest offshore oil-industry accident in history.
The Cullen Inquiry produced 106 recommendations. Its legacy included stronger permit-to-work systems, improved emergency arrangements and the UK’s later safety-case regime. A common mix-up is to count only the 165 platform deaths rather than the widely reported total of 167.
