The 2024 Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball was decorated with 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles.
The triangles formed the ball’s illuminated crystal panels and were arranged in a pattern called “The Gift of Love.” Waterford Crystal has supplied the ball’s crystal designs for the modern version, which is displayed above Times Square during the annual countdown.
The ball is 12 feet in diameter and weighs nearly 12,000 pounds. Its surface is lit by thousands of LEDs, allowing the design to shine brightly during the televised ceremony and the final descent.
The crystal count can change when the ball receives a new design, so this number refers specifically to the 2024 version. It should not be confused with the number of lights, the ball’s weight, or the total number of crystal pieces used on earlier editions.
