The United States Semiquincentennial Commission behind America250 has 24 voting commissioners.
The commission’s membership is designed to combine elected officials with private citizens. It includes four U.S. senators and four members of the House of Representatives, with appointments divided between congressional majority and minority leadership.
The remaining 16 voting commissioners are private citizens. They are also divided among the Senate majority leader, Senate minority leader, Speaker of the House, and House minority leader, with four appointments associated with each leadership office. One private citizen is designated chair by the president.
Additional federal officials and institutional representatives may participate as nonvoting ex officio members. That distinction matters: the frequently cited total of 24 refers to voting commissioners, not every person connected with the commission. America250’s broad national effort therefore has a formally balanced core membership alongside wider governmental and nonprofit participation.
