The Pearl Harbor attack killed 2,403 U.S. servicemembers and civilians. The total includes 2,335 military personnel and 68 civilians who died during the attacks on December 7, 1941.
The dead came from the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, and civilian communities. Many casualties occurred aboard ships and at airfields, where personnel had little warning and aircraft were destroyed on the ground.
This total is distinct from the number wounded, which was 1,178. It is also separate from Japanese losses, which were much smaller. The casualty figures are sometimes reported with different labels, so specifying that 2,403 includes both military personnel and civilians avoids confusion.
