Porsche produced 918 units of the Porsche 918 Spyder.
The number was deliberately built into the car’s identity: Porsche planned the 918 Spyder as a strictly limited series of 918 examples. Production ran from September 2013 to June 2015 at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen facility in Stuttgart, after the production car was unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.
The 918 Spyder was a two-seat, mid-engine plug-in hybrid combining a naturally aspirated 4.6-litre V8 with two electric motors. Together, the systems produced about 887 horsepower and gave the car all-wheel drive. Buyers could also specify a Weissach Package that reduced weight and added aerodynamic and carbon-fibre-focused equipment.
The 918 was first shown as a concept at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. It joined the McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari in the era’s celebrated hybrid “holy trinity,” but it was also technologically significant: its plug-in hybrid system and electric torque-vectoring approach influenced Porsche’s later performance-car development. The 918 figure refers to the production model, not every related concept or special-edition 911.
