Stewart Island, New Zealand, has one town: Oban. The settlement sits on Halfmoon Bay on the island's eastern side and contains most of the island's permanent population.
The island's official name is Stewart Island/Rakiura, reflecting both its English name and its Māori name. It lies south of New Zealand's South Island and covers about 1,680 square kilometres, but its population is very small compared with its land area.
Oban functions as the island's main service and transport centre. Ferries connect it with Bluff on the South Island, while visitors also use flights and water taxis to reach walking tracks, coastal areas, and nearby islands. Small bays and localities exist elsewhere, but they are not separate towns in the usual geographic sense.
The island is often associated with wilderness rather than urban settlement. About 85% of its area is covered by Rakiura National Park, established in 2002. Stewart Island is also famous for tokoeka, the southern brown kiwi, and for nearby predator-free Ulva Island.
