The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor killed 2,403 Americans in total.
The total included U.S. military personnel and civilians killed during the attack on December 7, 1941. Most of the military deaths occurred aboard ships and at airfields, where personnel were caught before they could fully organize a response.
The dead included 2,335 U.S. service members and 68 civilians. The figure is distinct from the number of wounded, which was higher, and from later casualty counts connected with the wider Pacific War.
USS Arizona accounted for a particularly large share of the deaths because its forward magazine exploded after a bomb strike. The total is also different from the number killed aboard any single ship, such as USS Oklahoma, or from civilian-only casualty figures.
