The Lion King won six Tony Awards in 1998.
The Broadway musical was adapted from Disney’s 1994 animated film and opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre in November 1997. Its creative team transformed the film into a stage production using large-scale puppetry, masks, costumes, movement, and lighting to represent the animals and landscapes of the African savanna.
Among its six Tony wins was Best Musical. Julie Taymor became the first woman to win the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, and she also won for costume design. The musical’s score combines songs from the film by Elton John and Tim Rice with additional material by Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and Hans Zimmer. The show remains one of Broadway’s major international successes.
