The Band’s Visit won 10 Tony Awards in 2018.
The musical opened on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on November 9, 2017. It features music and lyrics by David Yazbek and a book by Itamar Moses, based on the 2007 Israeli film of the same name. The story follows an Egyptian police band that becomes stranded overnight in a small Israeli town.
At the 72nd Tony Awards, The Band’s Visit won in all 10 categories for which it was nominated. Its victories included Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Direction of a Musical for David Cromer, and acting awards for Katrina Lenk and Tony Shalhoub.
The production’s 10-for-10 result made it one of the most dominant Tony performances by a musical. It also received the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, while the cast recording preserved Yazbek’s Middle Eastern-influenced score.
