Hadestown won eight Tony Awards in 2019.
The musical opened on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre on April 17, 2019, after previews began in March. Written by Anaïs Mitchell, Hadestown intertwines the Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice with the stories of Hades and Persephone in a folk- and jazz-influenced theatrical world.
Its eight Tony wins included Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Direction of a Musical for Rachel Chavkin, and acting awards for André De Shields and Rachel Chavkin’s production team. The show received 14 nominations, making it the most nominated production of the 2018–19 Broadway season.
Hadestown developed from Mitchell’s 2010 concept album and a stage production that toured in Vermont and Massachusetts before reaching New York. The Tony result is sometimes confused with the number of nominations: the production received 14 nominations but won eight awards.
