Jordan won the award in every NBA Finals series he played. His six Finals MVP seasons were 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, and 1998—the same six seasons in which the Chicago Bulls won the NBA championship. That perfect record is a major reason his Finals performances are central to discussions of his legacy.
His first award came in 1991, when Chicago defeated the Los Angeles Lakers. Jordan then won three straight Finals MVP awards during the Bulls' first three-peat, becoming the first player to do so. After returning from his brief baseball hiatus, he added three more awards during Chicago's second three-peat from 1996 through 1998.
The total is sometimes confused with Jordan's five regular-season MVP awards or his three NBA All-Star Game MVP awards. It is also important to distinguish Finals MVP from championship count: in Jordan's case, both numbers are six, but the awards recognize his individual performance in each championship series.
