Carl Sagan was married three times. His marriages connected him with three influential women: biologist Lynn Margulis, artist Linda Salzman, and writer Ann Druyan.
Sagan married Margulis in 1957, while he was a graduate student at the University of Chicago. They had two sons, Dorion and Jeremy, before divorcing in the mid-1960s. He married Salzman in 1968; they had a son, Nick, and their marriage ended in 1981.
Later in 1981, Sagan married Ann Druyan, a writer and creative collaborator who worked with him on projects including Cosmos and the Voyager Golden Record. They remained married until Sagan’s death in 1996 and had two children, Alexandra—known as Sasha—and Samuel. The number three refers to his marriages, not to his children: Sagan had five children in total.
