The Times Square Ball is planned to drop eight times during the special July 2026 America250 event.
The one-off event is designed to count down to midnight on July 4, 2026, across the time zones of the United States. Eight drops correspond to the eight principal U.S. time zones represented in the planned celebration. This makes the event different from the traditional New Year’s Eve ball drop.
The Times Square Ball has normally been associated with New Year’s Eve in New York City. The America250 program adds a holiday-focused celebration centered on Independence Day. It was announced as a collaboration between Times Square organizers and the United States Semiquincentennial Commission.
The number eight refers to the planned drops, not the number of time zones in the world or the number of U.S. states. The event is intended to connect a familiar New York tradition with a nationwide anniversary.
