Sugar Ray Robinson fought Jake LaMotta six times.
Their rivalry began on October 2, 1942, at Madison Square Garden, where Robinson won a unanimous decision. LaMotta then handed Robinson the first professional defeat of his career in their second meeting on February 5, 1943. Robinson responded by winning the third bout less than three weeks later, and he also won their fourth and fifth fights.
The sixth and final meeting took place on February 14, 1951. LaMotta was defending the world middleweight championship, but Robinson stopped him by technical knockout in the 13th round. That brutal contest became known as the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.
Robinson won five of the six fights, while LaMotta won once. The rivalry is sometimes confused with the film Raging Bull, which dramatized LaMotta's life and several episodes from the series. Their six-bout rivalry remains one of boxing's most famous recurring matchups.
