A quinceañera may present 15 symbolic candles during the candle ceremony.
The candles correspond to the celebrant’s fifteen years of life. Depending on family and regional custom, she may give them to parents, grandparents, siblings, relatives, friends, or other people who have been important in her life. The accompanying words or dedications are personal rather than standardized.
This ritual is one of several possible quinceañera traditions. Some celebrations include a special dance, a toast, a cake ceremony, or a presentation to guests; others omit particular elements or adapt them to the family’s religious and cultural background.
The candle ritual should not be confused with the religious service that some families attend. A church ceremony and a reception are separate components, and neither is required in every modern quinceañera.
