How many spikes are on the Statue of Liberty's crown?

The story behind the answer

The Statue of Liberty’s crown has seven spikes, or rays.

The rays form a radiant halo called a nimbus or aureole, reinforcing the statue’s identity as Liberty Enlightening the World. The crown also contains 25 windows, so the seven rays are only one part of its design. The Statue’s official name is Liberty Enlightening the World, a title that connects its crown and torch with illumination and freedom.

The seven rays are often said to represent the seven continents and seven seas, giving Liberty a worldwide meaning. However, that interpretation is symbolic rather than a firmly documented original design explanation; the National Park Service describes the rays primarily as a halo. The Statue of Liberty was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated in New York Harbor in 1886.

A common mix-up is confusing the seven spikes with the crown’s 25 windows. Visitors who climb to the crown can look through those windows, while the rays extend outward above the diadem.
