How many special quarter designs are planned for the 2026 U.S. Semiquincentennial coin series?

The story behind the answer

The 2026 U.S. Semiquincentennial coin series includes five special quarter designs.

The quarter program was authorized as part of the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020. The five designs were intended to represent different parts of the American story, including the Mayflower Compact, the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Gettysburg Address.

The set is part of a broader group of anniversary coinage. The 2026 program also includes redesigned cents and nickels with dual dates, a redesigned dime, a special half dollar, and a possible one-dollar issue under the authorizing legislation. The quarter series is therefore only one portion of the overall coin program.

The number five is easy to confuse with the number of historically significant “leading cities” listed in the commission’s planning law, which is four. It is also separate from the 13 original colonies and the 50 states represented by modern American symbolism.
