The standard Monopoly board has 40 spaces.
Those spaces form a square circuit with four corner spaces: GO, Jail, Free Parking, and Go to Jail. Between the corners are property groups, four railroads, two utilities, tax spaces, and the Chance and Community Chest spaces.
The board's layout is designed for repeated circulation rather than a finish line. Players move clockwise by rolling two dice, buy properties when eligible, and collect rent when opponents land on their owned spaces. The four corners are not all ordinary properties: Jail and Free Parking have special roles, while Go to Jail sends a player directly to Jail.
The 40-space arrangement is shared by the classic board and many standard international editions, although themed versions sometimes alter the names, artwork, or rules. Counting the board spaces is different from counting purchasable locations: only 28 spaces are properties that players can buy, consisting of 22 streets, four railroads, and two utilities.
