How many songs are in the setlist of Guitar Hero II (PS2 version)?

The story behind the answer

The PlayStation 2 version of Guitar Hero II has 64 songs in its setlist.

Those 64 tracks consist of 40 songs in the main Career-mode setlist and 24 unlockable bonus songs. The main songs are arranged across difficulty-based tiers, while the bonus tracks can be purchased with in-game money and then played in modes such as Quick Play, competitive play, and cooperative play. This gives the PS2 edition its commonly cited total of 64 songs on the game disc.

The number is often confused with the later Xbox 360 release. That version has 74 songs on its disc because it adds eight main-setlist songs and two bonus songs, and it also supports downloadable content. The PlayStation 2 total does not include songs from later downloadable releases or tracks from other Guitar Hero games. Most of Guitar Hero II's featured songs are covers, although several tracks use original master recordings, and all of the bonus songs are master recordings.
