How many songs are in Guitar Hero 5's track list?

The story behind the answer

Guitar Hero 5 has 85 songs in its on-disc track list.

The 85-song total refers to the main soundtrack included with the game, excluding downloadable content and imported songs from earlier Guitar Hero releases. Those tracks represent 83 separate artists, so the song count is slightly higher than the artist count because some performers contribute more than one track.

Guitar Hero 5 was released in September 2009 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and Wii. Its soundtrack drew from master recordings and live performances, and 30 artists were making their music-rhythm-game debut. More than half of the songs had been released during the 2000s.

A common mix-up is confusing the 85 on-disc songs with the much larger library available after downloads and imports. Unlike earlier games, Guitar Hero 5 made every on-disc song immediately playable rather than requiring players to unlock the entire soundtrack through Career mode.
