How many Silmarils did J.R.R. Tolkien’s Fëanor create in The Silmarillion?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien’s Fëanor created three Silmarils in The Silmarillion.

The Silmarils were three jewels made by Fëanor, the most renowned craftsman among the Noldor. They captured the light of the Two Trees of Valinor, Telperion and Laurelin, before those trees were destroyed. Their beauty and sacred light made them objects of immense desire, but they could not be copied or remade.

After Morgoth stole the jewels, Fëanor and his sons swore an oath to recover them. That oath drives much of the tragedy in The Silmarillion, including wars among Elves, Men, and other peoples. The three jewels eventually reached very different destinations: one was cast into the sea, one into the earth, and one carried into the heavens. The number is sometimes confused with the seven sons of Fëanor or the three Rings associated with other Tolkien stories.
