As of 2024, five seasons of “The Handmaid’s Tale” had aired. The dystopian television series premiered on Hulu in April 2017 and follows June Osborne, known in Gilead as Offred, as she survives a regime that enslaves fertile women as Handmaids.
The first season arrived in 2017, followed by season two in 2018 and season three in 2019. Production and release of the fourth season were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic; it eventually premiered in 2021. Season five premiered in September 2022, making it the latest completed season during 2024.
The number can be confusing because Hulu renewed the series for a sixth and final season in 2022. That announcement did not mean six seasons had already aired. The sixth season premiered in 2025, after the date specified in the question. The series is based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel, but its later seasons continue beyond the novel’s original storyline and develop June’s conflict with Gilead in new directions.
