Five quarter designs were authorized for the United States Semiquincentennial coin program.
The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 authorized special coin designs connected with the 250th anniversary of American independence. For the quarter, the law called for five designs. One was required to depict women’s contributions to independence, making the quarter series broader than a single anniversary emblem.
The semiquincentennial coin program also included commemorative designs for other denominations. The planned group included a dime, a half dollar, and a one-dollar coin, while cents and nickels remained in their current series. Special silver and gold pieces were also struck for collectors.
The number five refers specifically to the quarter designs, not to the total number of coin denominations in the full program. That distinction matters because the legislation covered several denominations at once. The program was authorized in 2020, before the main anniversary year of 2026.
