How many quarter designs did the 2020 law authorize for the United States Semiquincentennial?

The story behind the answer

The 2020 law authorized five quarter designs for the United States Semiquincentennial.

The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 permitted the United States Mint to create special coin designs for 2026. Its semiquincentennial provisions included a series of five quarter designs, with one intended to depict women’s contributions to American independence.

The same legislation covered other denominations and programs. It allowed commemorative designs for a dime, half dollar, and dollar, while the cent and nickel were to remain in their current series. That broader package is why the number of quarter designs can be confused with the total number of planned coins.

The five-quarter provision concerns design variety, not five separate anniversaries or five years of production. The coins were authorized as part of the 250th-anniversary program, linking everyday U.S. currency with the national commemoration.
