How many premier class World Championships did Valentino Rossi win?

The story behind the answer

Valentino Rossi won seven premier-class World Championships.

His titles came in 2001 in the 500cc category, followed by MotoGP crowns in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009. The 500cc class became MotoGP in 2002, so Rossi’s premier-class total combines one 500cc championship with six MotoGP championships.

This total is different from Rossi’s overall World Championship tally: he won nine championships across all classes. His two lower-class titles came in the 125cc class in 1997 and the 250cc class in 1999.

A common mix-up is counting only the officially named MotoGP era, which would give Rossi six titles. The quiz’s wording says “premier class,” correctly including his 2001 500cc championship.
