How many Pokémon species did Generation VI introduce in Pokémon X and Y?

The story behind the answer

Generation VI introduced 72 Pokémon species in Pokémon X and Y.

The sixth generation debuted on Nintendo 3DS in 2013. Its new species begin at National Pokédex number 650 with Chespin and end at number 721 with Volcanion, giving the generation a total of 72 species.

This generation also marked the move of the main series to fully polygonal 3D environments and character models. Pokémon X and Y introduced the Kalos region, which draws heavily on France, and added Mega Evolution as a temporary battle transformation for selected Pokémon.

The total can be confused with the number of Pokémon available in the games or the number of new forms. The 72 figure counts species introduced as Generation VI Pokémon, while Mega Evolutions and other alternate forms are treated separately. Fairy was also added as a new type, and some older Pokémon were retrospectively given Fairy typing.
