How many Pokémon species are featured in the original Pokémon Snap?

The story behind the answer

The original Pokémon Snap features 63 Pokémon species.

Pokémon Snap does not include every species from the first-generation games. Instead, it presents a selected group of 63 Pokémon for players to photograph across Pokémon Island’s beaches, tunnels, rivers, caves, volcanoes, and other environments.

The game’s objective is observation rather than capture. Todd Snap travels automatically through each course, and players use apples, Pester Balls, and the Poké Flute to attract, disturb, awaken, or otherwise reveal Pokémon. Professor Oak then scores the resulting photographs.

The figure is easy to confuse with 151, the number of species in the original Pokédex, or with the number of Pokémon supported by Pokémon Stadium. Pokémon Snap’s smaller selection reflects its photography-focused design and the technical limits of creating detailed real-time 3D scenes on the Nintendo 64. Its curated roster also gives each course a recognizable set of creatures and photographic opportunities.
