How many points is a regular dot worth in Pac-Man?

The story behind the answer

A regular dot in the original Pac-Man arcade game is worth 10 points.

These small dots, often called pac-dots or pellets, are the main objects Pac-Man must collect. A standard maze contains 240 regular dots, along with four larger power pellets. Clearing every dot completes the level and advances Pac-Man to the next maze.

Regular dots are worth less individually than power pellets, fruit, or ghosts, but their total is substantial. Eating all 240 regular dots contributes 2,400 points before counting the four power pellets, bonus fruit, or vulnerable ghosts. Because dots fill nearly every corridor, collecting them efficiently is central to both survival and high-score play.

The larger flashing power pellets are easy to confuse with ordinary dots. They are worth 50 points each and also turn the ghosts blue for a limited time, allowing Pac-Man to eat them for escalating bonuses. Ports and later Pac-Man games can alter maze layouts or scoring, so this answer refers specifically to the original arcade game released by Namco in 1980.
