How many points is a conversion kick worth in a game of rugby?

The story behind the answer

A conversion kick is worth two points in rugby.

A conversion is attempted after a team scores a try. The kicker must send the ball over the crossbar and between the goalposts, adding two points if successful. Because a standard try is worth five points in rugby union, a converted try produces a total of seven points.

The kick is taken from a line through the spot where the try was scored, which means tries near the touchline create more difficult conversion attempts. The kicker may use either a place-kick or a drop-kick in rugby union. In rugby sevens, the conversion is normally taken as a drop-kick because the game’s faster schedule limits the available time.

A conversion is different from a penalty goal or drop goal, each of which is worth three points in rugby union. Rugby league also awards two points for a conversion, although its try is worth four points, making a converted try worth six.
