How many players were selected in the 2017 NFL Draft?

The story behind the answer

The 2017 NFL Draft selected 253 players. The seven-round draft took place from April 27–29, 2017, outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art on the Rocky Steps.

The Cleveland Browns used the first overall pick on defensive end Myles Garrett. The final selection, pick No. 253, was quarterback Chad Kelly, chosen by the Denver Broncos; he received the traditional nickname “Mr. Irrelevant.”

The total was higher than the standard 224 picks produced by seven rounds of 32 selections because teams received compensatory picks. The 2017 draft included 32 compensatory selections, awarded to 16 teams for losing qualifying free agents. It was also the first NFL Draft in which compensatory selections could be traded.

Among the position groups, cornerbacks led with 34 selections, followed by wide receivers with 32 and linebackers with 29. The SEC produced the most selections among college conferences, with 53 players drafted.
