A standard Apex Legends squad has 3 players. This three-person format is the game’s classic Trios structure, built around complementary Legends, shared loot, coordinated movement, revives, and team-focused abilities.
Apex Legends was designed as a squad-based battle royale rather than a purely solo shooter. Each player selects a Legend with a distinct tactical role, and a three-person team can combine abilities such as scouting, defense, mobility, and healing. Respawn’s early development materials also describe teams of three as part of the game’s original design.
The number 3 applies to the standard Trios experience, not every mode in the game. Apex has also offered Duos, in which teams contain 2 players, and solo or special limited-time formats. That is why the wording “standard squad” matters: it points to the familiar three-player team rather than the maximum number of people who might participate in other playlists.
Apex matches can contain many squads at once, but the basic team unit remains separate from the full lobby. The standard battle-royale format traditionally supports up to 60 players, divided into 20 three-player squads.
