How many playable races are featured in the original StarCraft?

The story behind the answer

The original StarCraft features three playable races: the Terrans, the Zerg, and the Protoss.

Each race has a distinct visual identity, technology, economy, and approach to warfare. Terrans rely on adaptable human machinery and structures, the Zerg use biological evolution and overwhelming numbers, and the Protoss combine advanced technology with powerful psionic abilities.

The three-race design became one of StarCraft’s defining features. Unlike many strategy games with broadly similar factions, StarCraft gives each race different production systems and strategic priorities while maintaining competitive balance.

StarCraft II preserves the same three-race structure across its campaigns and multiplayer modes. The three races are sometimes confused with the wider factions and political groups in the story, such as the Terran Dominion or the United Earth Directorate; those are organizations within the setting, not separate playable races.
