How many playable characters are there in Final Fantasy VI?

The story behind the answer

Final Fantasy VI has 14 permanent playable characters. That unusually large ensemble is one of the game’s defining features and remains the biggest permanent playable cast in the main Final Fantasy series.

The roster includes Terra Branford, Locke Cole, Celes Chere, Edgar and Sabin Figaro, Cyan Garamonde, Setzer Gabbiani, Shadow, Relm Arrowny, Strago Magus, Gau, Mog, Umaro, and Gogo. Each character has a distinct background and a specialized combat ability, such as Edgar’s mechanical Tools, Sabin’s martial-arts Blitz techniques, or Relm’s magical Sketch command.

The number can be confusing because several other characters are temporarily controllable during specific scenes or battles. Those short-term characters are not counted among the 14 permanent player characters. Shadow’s availability can also vary depending on the player’s decisions, but he is still part of the game’s recognized permanent roster. In North America, the original release was titled Final Fantasy III, a numbering difference that sometimes causes additional confusion.
