How many pieces was the Statue of Liberty shipped in?
Answer
350 pieces
Answer
350 pieces
The Statue of Liberty was shipped in 350 pieces.
The statue was built in France, where its copper skin and iron framework were assembled to test the design. Once the work was complete, the enormous monument was taken apart so it could fit aboard the French transport frigate Isère for its Atlantic journey. The pieces were packed into 214 crates and shipped in 1885.
The Isère reached New York Harbor on June 17, 1885. The statue then remained in storage while workers and donors in the United States finished the pedestal on Bedloe’s Island, now called Liberty Island. Reassembly took about four months, and the completed monument was dedicated on October 28, 1886.
This shipment was an engineering and logistics feat, not a simple delivery of prefabricated panels. Gustave Eiffel’s internal framework allowed the copper exterior to be dismantled and rebuilt without losing the statue’s shape. The hand and torch had already been displayed in the United States, but the accepted figure for the shipped statue is still 350 pieces.
