How many people died aboard USS Oklahoma during the Pearl Harbor attack?

The story behind the answer

A total of 429 people died aboard USS Oklahoma during the Pearl Harbor attack.

The battleship was moored at Battleship Row when Japanese torpedo bombers struck it repeatedly. Multiple torpedo hits caused Oklahoma to roll onto its side, trapping many sailors and Marines inside the overturned hull. Rescue teams cut through the ship and saved 32 people, some of them days after the attack.

The death toll included 415 sailors and 14 Marines. USS Oklahoma suffered the second-highest number of fatalities among the American battleships attacked at Pearl Harbor, behind USS Arizona.

The wreck was later righted and refloated, but the ship was never returned to service. It was sold for scrap after World War II and sank while being towed to the mainland in 1947, so the casualty figure is separate from the later loss of the physical ship.
