The Green Mile was originally published in six parts. Stephen King’s serial novel appeared as six paperback volumes released between March and August 1996, allowing readers to experience the story in installments rather than waiting for a conventional single-volume edition.
The first installment, The Two Dead Girls, was published on March 28, 1996. New volumes followed roughly monthly, culminating in Coffey on the Mile on August 29, 1996. The story follows Paul Edgecombe, a death-row supervisor at Cold Mountain Penitentiary, and John Coffey, an inmate with mysterious healing abilities.
King was inspired in part by the nineteenth-century serial publishing tradition associated with writers such as Charles Dickens. The format also preserved suspense because readers could not skip ahead to the ending. The complete novel was later issued in one volume on May 5, 1997, which is why some readers know it only as a standard novel rather than a six-part publication.
