Eight other Allied nations signed the surrender instrument after Chester Nimitz in 1945.
Nimitz signed as the representative of the United States after General Douglas MacArthur accepted the surrender. Representatives from China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand then signed.
The sequence reflected the multinational nature of the war against Japan. Each representative signed for a different Allied power, making the document more than a bilateral agreement between Japan and the United States.
The total is sometimes misstated because MacArthur signed for the Allied powers before Nimitz, while Nimitz signed specifically for the United States. Counting the signatories after Nimitz gives eight national representatives.
