Roger Federer won one Olympic gold medal. He earned it in men’s doubles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, partnering with fellow Swiss player Stan Wawrinka.
Federer and Wawrinka defeated Sweden’s Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson in the final, winning in four sets. The gold was especially significant because Federer entered the Games as the world No. 1 in singles, yet his Olympic triumph came in doubles rather than the singles event.
Federer also came close to Olympic singles gold. At the 2012 London Olympics, he reached the final but lost to Great Britain’s Andy Murray in straight sets on Wimbledon’s grass courts. Federer therefore won an Olympic singles silver medal, not a singles gold medal.
He also competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where he finished fourth in singles after losing the bronze-medal match. The common mistake is counting his 2008 doubles gold and 2012 singles silver as two gold medals; only the Beijing doubles title was Olympic gold.
