How many official time zones does Russia span?

The story behind the answer

Russia spans 11 official time zones. They extend from UTC+2 in Kaliningrad to UTC+12 in the far east, covering about 11,000 kilometres across the country.

Russia’s time-zone arrangement reflects its enormous east–west width. When it is morning in western Russia, the day may already be well advanced in Siberia and the Russian Far East. The country’s most easterly inhabited areas use Kamchatka Time, while Moscow uses Moscow Time, UTC+3.

Russia previously used seasonal daylight saving time, but in 2014 it permanently moved most regions to standard time offsets. The number of time zones is sometimes confused with the number of longitudinal hours in the country or with the world’s total time-zone count. Russia’s 11-zone figure refers to its legally observed standard offsets, not merely geographic longitude.
