How many official singles were released from Metallica’s self-titled album, commonly called The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

Five official singles were released from Metallica’s self-titled album, commonly called The Black Album.

The singles were “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.” Together, they gave the album an unusually long promotional life and highlighted several sides of the band’s new sound, from stadium-ready riffs to power-ballad dynamics.

“Enter Sandman” led the campaign in 1991. “The Unforgiven” followed, while “Nothing Else Matters” became one of Metallica’s most recognizable ballads. “Wherever I May Roam” and “Sad but True” were issued later, extending the album’s presence into 1992 and 1993.

“Don’t Tread on Me” is a common source of confusion. It was sent to rock radio promotionally, but it was not released as a commercial single. Counting it would produce six, but the album’s official single total is five.
