Metallica promoted The Black Album with five official singles. They were “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.”
The singles were released over a long period, beginning with “Enter Sandman” on July 29, 1991, before the album itself arrived. “The Unforgiven” followed in October 1991, while “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True” appeared during 1992 and 1993.
The campaign helped make the album unusually visible for a heavy-metal release. “Enter Sandman” reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, while all five official singles charted there. “Don’t Tread on Me” was promoted to rock radio but was not counted as a commercial single.
