Five official singles promoted Metallica's 1991 album commonly called The Black Album.
The singles were “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.” Together, they extended the album's reach across rock radio and helped make it Metallica's most widely recognized release.
“Don't Tread on Me” is a common source of confusion. It was sent to rock radio after the album came out, but it was not released as a commercial single. That distinction is why the official single count is five rather than six.
The singles appeared over a long promotional period. “Enter Sandman” arrived before the album, while “Sad but True” was released in 1993. All five official singles charted on the Billboard Hot 100, although their positions varied considerably.
