How many official languages does Paraguay have?

The story behind the answer

Paraguay has two official languages: Spanish and Guaraní. Both have official status under Paraguay’s 1992 Constitution, making the country one of the most notable bilingual societies in South America.

Spanish is widely used in government, business, education, media, and formal documents. Guaraní, an Indigenous language of the Tupian family, remains deeply rooted in everyday life and is spoken or understood by a large majority of Paraguayans. Many people use Jopara, a fluid mixture of Spanish and Guaraní, especially in informal conversation.

Paraguay’s language situation reflects its history. Guaraní remained powerful through the colonial period because relatively few Spanish settlers arrived and Indigenous and mixed Paraguayan communities continued using it. Today, Portuguese and several other Indigenous languages are also spoken by minority communities, but they are not official nationwide languages. That is why the answer is two, even though Paraguay has far more than two languages in use.
