Pokémon X and Y introduced 72 new Pokémon species.
Released worldwide in 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS, X and Y began Generation VI and set their adventure in the France-inspired Kalos region. The new species ran from Chespin, number 650, to Volcanion, number 721, in the National Pokédex.
The games marked a major visual change for the main series by using fully rendered polygonal 3D graphics instead of the primarily sprite-based presentation of earlier titles. They also introduced the Fairy type, Mega Evolution, trainer customization, Sky Battles, and Horde Encounters.
The 72 species count applies only to newly created Pokémon. X and Y also included many returning species from earlier generations, so the total Pokémon encountered in the games was much larger. The number is therefore different from the National Pokédex total, which reached 721 species during Generation VI.
