How many miles did the American Freedom Train travel during its 1975–76 Bicentennial tour?

The story behind the answer

The American Freedom Train traveled 25,833 miles during its 1975–76 Bicentennial tour.

The train was a mobile museum celebrating the history and culture of the United States. It carried 26 cars of exhibits and moved through all 48 contiguous states. Its long route allowed millions of people to see the collection without traveling to a single national exhibition site.

The journey lasted about 21 months. The train began its tour in Wilmington, Delaware, in April 1975, crossed the Northeast and Midwest, traveled through the western states, and then returned through the South and along the Atlantic coast. Its final city stop was Miami, Florida, in December 1976.

Different locomotives pulled the train in different regions, including Reading Company No. 2101, Southern Pacific 4449, and Texas & Pacific No. 610. The mileage figure describes the entire route, not the distance covered by any one locomotive.
