Operation Downfall consisted of two major planned operations for invading Japan.
The first was Operation Olympic, scheduled for November 1945 and aimed at capturing southern Kyūshū, Japan’s southernmost main island. The second was Operation Coronet, planned for spring 1946 and aimed at the Kantō Plain near Tokyo on Honshū.
The invasion plan was never carried out. Japan’s surrender followed the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Soviet Union’s entry into the war, and Japan’s decision to accept the Potsdam Declaration.
Downfall is sometimes mistaken for the name of a single landing. It was the overall invasion plan, while Olympic and Coronet were its two successive components.
