How many LVT-4s were produced?

The story behind the answer

The United States produced 8,351 LVT-4s during the Second World War. The LVT-4 was an American Landing Vehicle Tracked design, an amphibious armoured carrier intended to move troops and supplies from ships across beaches and inland terrain.

Unlike earlier LVT models, the LVT-4 placed its engine at the rear and provided a front ramp. That arrangement made it much easier for infantry, ammunition, vehicles and other cargo to leave the vehicle quickly after reaching shore. The design was developed from combat experience in Pacific amphibious operations.

LVTs were often nicknamed “Buffaloes,” although the British commonly used that name for versions supplied through Lend-Lease. The LVT-4 should not be confused with the heavily armed LVT(A) assault variants, which were designed to provide direct fire support rather than simply carry cargo or troops. The large production total reflects the vehicle’s importance in Allied island campaigns and later European operations.
