The special pieces were designed for the United States semiquincentennial in 2026. Each $250 coin was announced as a Liberty Bell-shaped item containing one troy ounce of gold, connecting a recognizable symbol of American independence with the anniversary year.
The number 2,026 reflects the year of the celebration rather than the anniversary length. It is easy to confuse the mintage with 250, the denomination and anniversary number, or with 1,776, the year of the Declaration of Independence.
The same announcement also described 2,026 half-ounce $125 gold pieces and 2,026 half-ounce silver medals in the same Liberty Bell shape. These collector issues are separate from the circulating commemorative coin designs issued for 2026.
