How many Japanese representatives signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender in 1945?

The story behind the answer

Two Japanese representatives signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender in 1945.

The signatories were Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Yoshijiro Umezu, Chief of the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff. Shigemitsu signed on behalf of the Emperor and the Japanese government, while Umezu signed on behalf of Imperial General Headquarters.

Eleven Japanese delegates attended or were listed for the ceremony, but only two actually signed the instrument. This distinction causes a common counting error. The larger delegation included military, naval, and Foreign Ministry officials who accompanied the signatories aboard USS Missouri.

After the two Japanese signatures, Douglas MacArthur signed for the Allied powers, followed by representatives of the United States and eight other Allied governments. The ceremony took place in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945.
