Players must defeat eight Gym Leaders during the Kanto journey in Pokémon Red and Blue.
Each Gym Leader awards a badge after being defeated, and collecting all eight badges allows a trainer to challenge the Pokémon League. The Kanto Gyms are led by Brock, Misty, Lt. Surge, Erika, Koga, Sabrina, Blaine, and Giovanni.
The Gyms specialize in different types and use distinct themes, puzzles, and battle teams. Their locations are spread across Kanto, so the badge quest also structures the player’s progress through the region. The sequence is not simply a list of battles: access to some areas and the recommended challenge order depend on the game’s map and story.
The eight-Gym structure became a recognizable pattern for later main-series Pokémon games, although subsequent regions introduced different layouts and occasional variations. The Elite Four are separate from the eight Gym Leaders and are not included in this total.
